Santa Barbara & San Francisco Lifestyle & Documentary Photographer | About Alison

"Photography is a way of feeling, of touching, of loving. What you have caught on film is captured forever . . .

it remembers little things, long after you have forgotten everything."

Meet Alison

Hands down, I have the best job I can possibly imagine - I am passionate about people, relationships and photography, and I get to have meaningful, creative and fun interactions with all three . . . and make a living doing it!

I developed a keen and abiding fascination with psychology and photography early in life, and I've devoted myself wholeheartedly to learning as much as I possibly can about people and their emotional connections, and my craft.

Some interesting things about me:

  • I've shot six twins or sets of twins and counting in the few years I've been taking lifestyle portraits - so, if you're a twin, hit me up - I'll love working with you :) Also, when I was a child, I wanted to be a twin!

  • I love taking shots of hands and feet that tell a story
  • I like to know where expressions come from - "hands down" comes from horse racing - when a victory is guaranteed, a jockey will drop the reins as he crosses the finish line - interesting, huh?

  • I look forward to my weekend espresso (and yes, I did once think it might be expresso!) and I heart chocolate

  • I have a doctorate in clinical psychology, and I wrote my dissertation on the personalities and works of well-known 20th century photographers. My data showed that, for this group, certain photographic elements (e.g. distance of photographer from subject) tended to be related to certain personality traits (e.g. degree of emotional stability) - isn't that awesome?! The beginnings of a photographic personality test!

  • When I was a child I planned to have at least ten cats (I don't have any right now, but I still love them!)
  • In 2015, I shot a wedding using only an iPhone 6 - the couple liked some of these iPhone shots better than the 'real' photos! (See the blog post here)*

  • My current favorite song is 'Shape of You'

  • I would love to take your photo - I know this because I love to take anyone's photo!

Thank you so much for visiting my site, and I hope to meet you - feel free to connect any time!

* For any wedding photographers reading this - don't worry, I made sure I didn't get in the way of the hired photographers ;)

Since I mentioned my early years, just for fun, here are some of my very, very early photos - I think I've come a little way since then ;) The wedding photos of my beloved Burmese cats, Chester Blackmoon and Annie Rosemary, were with Polaroid, and the shots of my beautiful childhood friends were with actual film!
